Story / Histoire

An enigmatic luminous object with rings and its energy flow emerging from the void are the only link, the only contact to this intermediate place, a space beyond the worlds.

Un objet lumineux énigmatique muni d’anneaux et de son flux d’énergie émergeant du vide sont le seul lien, l’unique contact à ce lieu intermédiaire, un espace par-delà les mondes.

Layout ; I was inspired by the UT99 level, DM-1on1-Contact. A very fun aspect of this level is the possibility of throwing your enemies into the void. However, as it is easy to fall, certain sections of the ledges are raised in strategic places. An entire section has been added at the lowest floor where you can equip yourself with Flak and Grenade Launcher and thereby minimize falls.

Gameplay ; A pair of boots has been added. This pair is essential to reach the Shield Belt as well as the Redeemer. There are also several interesting places to reach by performing a liftjump or using the boots or by combining liftjumps and boots. Boots allow the player level domination if used effectively. Platforms have been added in the event of a fall, this gives the player a chance to escape, either with the boots or with the translocator. This level also includes all armor, the Bezerk, the KEG as well as the UDamage.

Visuals ; I opted for refined, abstract visuals, creating a place between worlds. To add a bit of visual effect, I created a sort of square reactor with smoke to hold the structures in place. The energy sphere as well as the rotating rings and the light beam are also a new creation in a nod to the original.

The level feature the awesome music track ‘The Course’ by Necto Ulin coming from his Unreal Tournament 99 remixes album.

Note, for all my levels I use Temporal AA since it offers the best visuals.

  1. This map reminds me of one of your previous maps for UT3, I believe it is called Itarion, which is indeed a stupendous and unique looking map. I’m really digging the clean, kind of abstract and severe geometrical design of this one, it is definitely something you don’t see often these days. Besides, this all reminds me somehow of Mirror’s Edge! Regardless, this looks fascinating and I like it! Keep up the good work! 😀

  3. This is truly an awesome map Steve! Based on the UT99 Contact map, which was one of my favorites. You added your own beautiful texture and some extra features like the pillars. Mastering this map with the liftjumps and jumpboots is very hard, prepare to fall down often, or get hit on the pillars..

  4. DM-Contact is similar to its namesake, in name only. It takes it to a new level quite literally. It is a beautiful map as are all of Steve’s creations. Game play comes at you from all directions keeping you on edge as if the map wasn’t doing that enough. Love the well thought out design and attentions to details, another Steve characteristic. This is a new favorite for me. Love this arena. It is eye candy for the mind.

    Thanks for this creation!

  5. In mid-2024, our group started playing a UT4 version of UT99’s Contact, and grew to enjoy it. By sheer coincidence, Steve was also working on an enhanced version of this map at the same time, so when he released it, we were fortunate to again experience the level anew with several twists, along with the incredible beauty that is always present in his maps.

For those that love flying high, the floating towers provide many new powerful pickups, including the shield belt, health keg and redeemer. Campers will enjoy these perches as well, one tower being replete with ammo packs. Good use of jump boots, and especially lift jumps utilizing both lifts are needed to reach the highest towers.

For those like myself that live a more grounded existence, the newly expanded lower area provides a welcome respite from the intensity of the exposed upper levels, with some health and the welcome flak cannon 🙂 It is a perfect place to recover from battle, heal up, and prepare to rejoin the fray.

Gameplay is frenetic as it was on the original UT99 map, but is amped up to 11 with the additions of the udamage and berserker on opposing sides of the map, found at the end of exposed peninsular platforms. Make sure you are quick when retrieving these items lest you find yourself the victim of weapons fire you cannot escape.

This is a fun and challenging map that will provide endless fragging for up to four players. The unique architecture and background visuals are the cherry on top of a great map!
