Details

Layout ; I inspired myself from one of my UT3 favorite, DM-Calahan 2 made by Glator.

Gameplay ; This relatively small level can be played in duel, accommodate well 4 players in DM and 6 to 8 in TDM. This is my first level to use a style of play where the player can walk between trees and branches, where the trees are not just decoration around the level but part of the playing field.

Visuals ; I opted for an organic and whimsical style. I successfully imported the Fantasy Cave Environment Set. Therefore, it only contains 26 static meshes, it’s a tiny pack! There are no materials included for a landscape and nothing to fill them with. Since the pack doesn’t contain anything organic like grass, plants, trees, etc., I chose to import various Megascans assets. The landscape material had to match the Fantasy Cave assets and was created by mixing various textures from several ‘Iceland’ packs. Besides the rocks, the stones also come from other ‘Iceland’ packs. The trees are from the ‘Black Alder‘ pack, the plants from the ‘Lush plants‘ pack. I also created 2 particles, one for the fireflies (if you get close enough, you can quickly see them flapping their wings) and another that replaces the default Jumpad. For the Jumpad, I searched quite a bit before I could find something cool with a moon inside that goes with the hieroglyphs.

All the assets are beautiful, on the other hand, the models are very large (MB) and the textures are huge (native 8K), so it didn’t take long for the pak file to be gigantic! Believe it or not, despite the large file size, the majority of textures resolutions are set to 2K or 1K or even lower, unlike their native resolution. The fact that I had to create different LOD levels for all the assets in order for the level to be playable contributes to the file size increase, unfortunately. Originally, the pak weighed over 3 GB. Now it’s 1.36 GB. The landscape shadows were also a real headache to make them look nice and accurate. I had to find various solutions online and do a lot of lighting edits to get the desired result.

The level feature the awesome music track ‘Deep’ by Fabian Joosten.

Note, for all my levels I use Temporal AA since it offers the best visuals.

  2. Another beautiful map by Steve! My first visual impression was amazing, with the buildings carved into the rock harkening back to the temple at the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (which is a real place in the ancient Jordanian city of Petra).

Gameplay is pleasing as well, and there is plenty of vertical interplay inside and just outside of the main building. Be aware of sniper fire from the wide nest at its highest level: Players are exposed to it while inside on the lower levels, or going for the shield belt, or daring to venture out across the landscape to grab the damage amplifier or the redeemer.

As noted in the description, be sure to set your Anti Aliasing Mode to Temporal in UT4’s Graphics Settings for the best visual experience.

  3. So pretty! What can I say. Everything Stevie does has that well thought out design! And his use of textures and lighting and knowing how players can use the layout makes everything flow.
