Details

This first part of my Journey to Oblevia project is DM-Oblivion, a simple but great duel level. It is my favorite level that came with UT99 😀

Weapons and ammo placement are the same as the original. Of course, the rooms geometry aren’t shaped the same as the original but still, the layout is the same. The only pickup addition is the 50 armor in the corridor under the ship mid room. Level scaling is a tad bigger. You can dodge, slide easily in all rooms except the corridors. In the corridors (mid field to Shock), you can wall run and wall dodge which you can’t do in the original. Ceiling is much higher so players have more headroom. The ship rooms look and feel less cramped and the corridors are a bit larger too even if it doesn’t seem like.

Gameplay wise, bots didn’t cover well the level with the default AI settings. After tweaking the AI volume, gameplay have improved a lot. Now, bots can easily give you a hard time if you play against high skilled bots 🙂

I hope my version will satisfy gamers looking for a remake that takes advantage of current graphics capabilities, as well as an overall experience worthy of the original.

The level feature the custom music track Perihelion (Extended mix) by Timothy Seals. A awesome track that will get you in the space traveling mood!

  1. Hi Steve, I’m liking the shell very much. I went back to original Unreal Tournament and play a few matches and I have to say your scaling is better than the original.

The original map is very impressive visually so I’m looking forward what the new engine can produce.

    1. Hey bud 😀

I’m happy to see that you like the scaling 🙂 Next release (RC1) will have even better scaling, rooms will be larger, ceiling higher, doorways a bit larger too and even wall dodge and wall run will be doable in the corridors.

At the time, the original was a blast! I specially loved the warp effect which will be something difficult to reproduce in UT4 to reach the same level of satisfaction in 2021. I hope to make a version that is a memorable level and a honorable remake.

    1. My pleasure my friend. I’m very curious to watch RC1 replays 😀

      EDIT

I watch all of your replays and THX for them, I found few things to fix for the final 🙂

    1. Your wish has “almost” been fulfilled 😉 For the final, I think you’ll be happy to see there are now 2 small ships escorting the main ship. One on each side toward the front of the main ship. Same as the original. The ship SM is awesome, coming from Qu0, I’m glad I could found a way of finally using it 😀

I spend all day trying to animate those ships! It’s not the best animation ever but it add a little touch. Better than nothing 🙂

  2. Merci Kind Sir! The screenshots deserve a double take. 😀

We’ve had some issues of folks re-dl’n the map while they already had it because it needs to be here :
    C:/Users/Administrators/Documents/UnrealTournament/Saved/Paks/DownloadedPaks. 😉

    Replays to follow!

    1. Hé hé, THX, because those screenshots was made for the final 😀

About the path, it’s odd because the game is supposed to load the levels from both location. Furthermore, the map name aren’t the same? I never had any problem loading levels that are located in both directory.

Anyway, the DownloadedPaks directory is for downloaded content, for those who don’t download the content from a server, the path in the post is the good one 😉

  3. The map became very Nice Steve! Thanks for your creation.
I did not have the opportunity to play it more then twice yet, but I am happy to this final version 🙂
Initially I thought it was too dark, as you might have seen my comment in the replay. But it had something to do with my settings. All maps suddenly were darker, so I increased the brightness. I guess it was one of the Windows10 miracles.

I had an issue with getting the map to work, but it was solved when I put the file in the folder as suggested by DSmoke.

  4. Hey Steve congrats on getting this one to final = )

You did a great job on the feel of the spaceship, bringing the map up to UE4 generation

I have to say the deco. and VFX are par excellence.

Thank you once again for blessing us with your time and passion.

  5. Wow, really great work right here! Congrats! This is perhaps one of my favourite maps in UT99. So simple, and yet it fills me with nostalgia every time I play it.
