I’m using completely new assets from the Modular SciFi Season 2 Starter Bundle. Again, I had to redo everything from scratch so I could use them in the UT4 Editor.

As for the layout, I inspire myself from one of my favorite UT2003 level called DM-1on1-Crash made by Paul Fahss. The level was part of Epic UT2003 bonus pack. And like DM-Chroma, DM-Chroma FPS and DM-Coda, it is a new level, not a remake.

I honestly found it very difficult to mesh this level. This has been my most difficult level to mesh for UT4 to date. Most of the meshes in this pack are designed to be used in a certain way and using them in another way doesn’t work at all 😦 So I was very limited in how to use these meshes. In addition, the scale of meshes, being part of the same group, such as the floor or ceiling for example, do not use the same scale. So using them side by side to create something that doesn’t seem too repetitive and to cover a fair amount of the floor and / or ceiling was very complicated. A plague to tell the truth! This pack includes 172 meshes in all but I could only use ± 5 for the walls, ± 5 for the floor and ceiling. All other meshes are props. I had to use a lot of imagination and creativity to build this level and that’s why it took me so long.

Not to mention the lighting which is extremely complex because of the materials. In order to achieve a pleasing visual, each time a small part of the scene was completed, the configuration of all the light actors had to be adjusted and several builds had to be performed to validate that everything was visually appealing. It was an extremely long and laborious process! If I am asked to start over, my answer is NO! In short, it was a very difficult challenge to create a complete level with this pack but I am very proud and satisfied with the final result 😀

For this level, I wanted to have a unique Jumpad with a sci-fi look. Since my knowledge of particles is extremely limited, it took me a long time to create the Jumpad. I’m lucky that there are several tutorials on the web available!

The level feature the excellent custom music track Axon presence (Mix 3) by John Maximilian Repka.

Note, for all my levels I use Temporal AA since it offers the best visuals.

  1. So far good map, I only think there could been some more meshes like pipes and lights to the walls like in the Crash UT2004 version, independently with this, the level is good done and makes fun.

    1. THX 😀 Well, I was tempted to add more lights at first but I change idea. The original is very bright and my goal for this level was to obtain a more darker look. Having less light bring more contrast between structure and make desired objects pops out. It would also make the map file bigger since it would generate more lightmaps for the additional lights and the file is already big.

I do like the pipes very much but I didn’t wanted to use them to much. Sometime, less is more 🙂

  2. Your map name couldn’t be more accurate – so, so Cruel. This map is the penultimate motto of Epics original dream:

For those who want to build a mountain of bones and climb to the top.

In environments that stun, against AI that kills.

For those who sake their lives in the pursuit of victory we salute you!

Thanking you for all your effort, passion and dedication. Celebrating your last map for a year that will be tough to forget.

Shalom Steve you deserve it = )
